Match scarcity wording to the inventory or demand it measures
Keep a scarcity statement only when you can trace its meaning to a real record for the same product, scope, and time. A stock-status label or a hidden listing does not establish a remaining quantity, and an inventory count does not establish demand. Compare the visible assertion with the source count and the rule that publishes it. Correct wording that overstates the record and remove unsupported counts or urgency while the evidence is unresolved.
For: A research-only merchant reviewing stock warnings, low-stock badges, or demand statements on its storefront.
Capture the exact visible assertion and the page, selected product option, placement, and time at which it appeared. A statement about remaining stock concerns available units. A statement about recent purchases or current interest concerns activity over a defined period. These need different evidence even when the same promotional element displays them.
Read the surrounding wording as well as the number. A count beside a selected variation can imply that variation's stock, while a catalog-level banner can imply something much broader. Do not use the existence of a genuine number elsewhere in the business to support a different assertion on this page.
The FTC's truth-in-advertising guidance says advertising must be truthful, not misleading, and appropriately substantiated, including on websites. Use that principle to examine the evidence behind the assertion. It does not establish that any particular phrase is lawful or resolve which laws apply to a merchant's circumstances.
Distinguish WooCommerce quantities from display settings
WooCommerce documents stock management as a quantity-tracking function. With stock management off, it keeps a stock status rather than a count. A product marked in stock under that arrangement therefore does not provide the numerical basis for a remaining-stock message. Locate the actual quantity source before publishing a number.
Stock display format and out-of-stock visibility settings control what the catalog shows. They do not, by themselves, demonstrate a physical count or demand measurement. A hidden item does not establish how many units remain; a visible stock warning needs its own connection to the underlying quantity and publishing rule.
When reconciling reservations, keep the actual order status with the record. WooCommerce's Hold stock setting applies to Pending payment orders, not On hold orders. That distinction is a reason to inspect the relevant records before explaining a discrepancy. It is not a universal formula for calculating available stock, especially when another inventory system or extension is involved.
Compare the same item, unit, and moment
Identify whether the source record describes a product, variation, batch, location, or combined pool. Then identify the unit being counted and what the visible message implies. Stock assigned to a different variation or unavailable location cannot establish the displayed item's availability without an actual allocation record connecting them.
Record when the source count last changed and when the storefront message was observed. Check the publication path with the person who manages it: whether the value comes directly from an inventory field, an integration, or manually maintained text. Treat an update delay as an observed gap to investigate, not as proof that a specific cache or plugin caused it.
Demand wording needs a separate activity record with a defined event and time window. Visits, orders, and completed purchases describe different events; one cannot silently stand in for another. If the store has no measurement supporting the published demand assertion, remove it. Do not generate a substitute count or convert an unmeasured assertion into vague popularity wording.
Choose a correction and a condition for taking it down
Retain a statement when the source, counting scope, and timing support what it communicates. Narrow it when a narrower fact is supported and the surrounding page can make that scope clear. Remove it when the number or urgency cannot be substantiated. A stock discrepancy also needs reconciliation in the relevant records; editing the promotional words alone does not resolve the inventory.
Assign the publication owner and a correction trigger. Useful triggers come from the actual workflow: a source stops updating, the counted product scope changes, or the observed number no longer matches the record used to produce it. Decide what will happen to the message at that point so stale text does not remain indefinitely while an integration question is open.
For a Prism website-review consultation, bring the public URL, the exact wording, the research-only product category, and a summary of which record supports or fails to support it. Keep customer-level activity records out of the form. The agreed scope determines the pages and questions reviewed; fees and terms are discussed before work. The inquiry leads to email follow-up and is not an appointment, purchase, or processing application.
Scarcity assertion record
Complete one record for each distinct assertion and product scope. Use references to your genuine inventory or activity records, not customer details. Retain, narrow, or remove the assertion according to what the comparison establishes; an unknown source leaves the claim unsupported.
Worksheet entries are not submitted by Prism’s worksheet and are not saved by the site. Use record types, availability, anonymized observations, or match/mismatch results. Do not enter government identifiers, customer names or addresses, customer messages, receipt-access links, card or bank details, passwords, or keys. How to interpret itDetermine whether it claims stock, demand, or another measured condition before selecting evidence.
Count source
Evidence to compareThe actual inventory quantity or activity record and the system maintaining it.
How to interpret itA stock status alone supplies no remaining quantity; a promotional setting supplies no demand count.
Counting scope
Evidence to compareProduct or variation, unit, location or pool, and any documented allocation.
How to interpret itThe number must describe the item and availability the visitor understands it to describe.
Demand basis
Evidence to compareFor a demand assertion, the event counted and the start and end of its measurement period.
How to interpret itDo not substitute visits for purchases or leave the time window undefined.

Limits
FTC guidance supplies a U.S. advertising principle, not a legal finding about a particular phrase, product, merchant, or country.
WooCommerce stock behavior applies to that platform's documented settings; an external inventory system needs its own records and configuration review.
A substantiated count does not establish product legality or processing eligibility. Do not put customer activity logs, payment data, or private credentials in the worksheet or public form.
FTC truth in advertising — checked 2026-09-28. Advertising must be truthful, not misleading, and appropriately substantiated across media including websites. This does not establish that a particular scarcity phrase is lawful.
WooCommerce product inventory settings — checked 2026-09-21. Enabled stock management tracks quantities; disabled management keeps stock status rather than counts. Hold stock applies to Pending payment orders, not On hold. Display format and out-of-stock visibility govern catalog presentation.
Prism solutions — checked 2026-09-21. Prism offers storefront review, card-processing preparation, and help with a provider's website questions. Scope, fees, and terms are discussed before work; the provider decides eligibility and account terms.
Prism contact — checked 2026-09-21. The form asks for the website, products, and question, excludes payment card details, passwords, and customer records, and leads to email follow-up. A request does not book an appointment, purchase a service, or submit a processing application.
