Orders and support

Accepting an inquiry is not the same as resolving it

Use the record type shown by the provider, its current status and its documented response options. Stripe explicitly says accepting an inquiry does not resolve it. Acceptance of a formal dispute has a different meaning: the business is not contesting the disputed amount. If an inquiry has already been accepted, reopen the record for inspection, preserve the action history and check what response and deadline remain. Do not close your internal case merely because someone clicked Accept.

For: A research-only merchant's operations owner checking whether an inquiry was actually resolved after someone selected an acceptance action.

Identify the record that owns the next action

Open the provider case associated with the payment and copy its exact type, status and stated deadline into private operating notes. Match it to the store order using references already held in the authorized systems. A support ticket titled chargeback or an order note saying accepted is not a substitute for the provider's classification.

Stripe distinguishes a formal dispute, an inquiry and an early fraud warning. Those records can concern the same payment without having the same response process. If the current provider screen shows an inquiry, follow its inquiry options. If a later record shows a formal dispute, record that transition and the formal case's instructions. An earlier inquiry action does not tell you that a later case is closed.

If you cannot establish which record is open, preserve the exact provider wording and ask for clarification tied to that reference. Keep the earliest stated action deadline visible while the classification is unresolved; do not assume a clarification request suspends it.

What the acceptance action can and cannot establish

In Stripe's formal-dispute process, accepting means the business will not contest the disputed amount. Challenging instead involves an evidence response, with the issuer deciding the outcome. That meaning should not be transferred to an inquiry: Stripe's response guide expressly warns that accepting an inquiry does not resolve it.

If someone has already clicked acceptance on an inquiry, preserve the action time and the provider's subsequent status. Then inspect the response options still available for that inquiry and the deadline the account actually shows. The existing action record is useful history, but it is not proof of resolution. Do not repeat the action hoping that a second click will give it a different meaning.

An internal support label can be corrected to reflect the unresolved provider case without inventing a financial outcome. Record what the team did and what the provider currently reports as separate facts. This lets another authorized person continue the work without relying on the earlier closure assumption.

Choose from the options for the current case

Stripe describes evidence or a full refund as ways an inquiry can be resolved without a dispute fee. That is a documented inquiry path, not an instruction to refund every inquiry or a promise that a particular merchant's action has completed. The authorized business owner must inspect the actual case, any existing refund and the response choices before acting.

If the record is already a formal open dispute, Stripe says a refund cannot be issued outside that dispute process. Do not carry an inquiry-stage refund plan forward without checking whether the case changed. Read the disputed amount as shown on the case as well; Stripe notes it can differ from the original charge.

For a formal dispute being challenged, Stripe says the evidence response is submitted once and cannot be edited afterward. The response window is limited and the issuer decides the outcome. Assign the decision and submission to an authorized owner who can meet the case's stated deadline. An inquiry classification worksheet is preparation for that decision, not the submitted response.

Close the handoff with resolution evidence

After any authorized response, retain the submission or refund reference and check the provider's resulting case status. A submission receipt establishes that a response was sent; it does not establish that the issuer found in the business's favor. If the case remains pending, keep a named follow-up owner and the next provider-stated requirement in the operating record.

Tell the support team only the outcome the provider record supports. Preserve communication history and the original inquiry notice alongside later records. This page's decision is complete when the team knows which process remains open, who owns its next action and what evidence would justify closing the internal case.

A Prism checkout consultation can discuss the operational handoff that caused the confusion. Describe the record types and the assistance needed without sending customer files or full payment details through the public form. Confirm scope, responsibilities, fees and terms before work; a consultation request does not submit evidence, authorize a refund or decide the issuer's outcome.

Inquiry classification record

Complete this for one provider case, keeping later linked cases separately identified. Use private record references without customer data. If the only resolution evidence is an acceptance click, the inquiry has not been shown to be resolved; record the next documented action and its owner.

Worksheet entries are not submitted by Prism’s worksheet and are not saved by the site. Use record types, availability, anonymized observations, or match/mismatch results. Do not enter government identifiers, customer names or addresses, customer messages, receipt-access links, card or bank details, passwords, or keys. Send sensitive documents only through the provider’s verified secure channel.

Limits

  • The acceptance distinction and refund restrictions described here are Stripe's. Another provider or payment method needs its own process and current case instructions.
  • No universal response deadline, fee amount or favorable outcome is established. Use the actual case and authorized business decision.
  • Do not put card numbers, authentication codes, customer correspondence, identity documents or credentials in the worksheet or public consultation form.
