Checkout reliability

Weight-based shipping has a gap for a real cart

Identify the shipping profile, location and destination zone relevant to the affected cart, then compare its recorded product weights and quantities with the lower and upper bounds of that rate set in the same unit. Write down any uncovered interval and whether the real cart falls within it. Shopify identifies weight gaps as a shipping-rate troubleshooting concern, but the gap alone does not establish the entire checkout outcome or a carrier failure. Preserve the observed result and correct only the verified configuration mismatch.

For: A research-only store owner or administrator investigating a Shopify checkout whose cart weight appears to fall outside the configured manual shipping rates.

Choose the rate set that could serve this cart

Begin with the actual checkout report: the time, the products and variations, quantities, and the message or shipping options shown. Retain the customer's full address inside the authorized store and record only the relevant destination-zone finding in your working sheet. A general list of every rate in the store cannot establish coverage for this checkout.

Shopify's troubleshooting guidance connects rate availability with the product's shipping profile, location, zone and rate conditions. Identify that scope before comparing weights. A rate in another profile or zone does not demonstrate that the affected products and destination have coverage. If the cart draws on more than one profile, keep the weight comparison for each relevant rate set separate instead of assuming one table describes the whole cart.

Record whether the rate under investigation is a manual weight-based rate or comes from a carrier or app. The interval comparison on this page examines the configured weight conditions. It does not reconstruct a carrier's pricing formula or establish that its connection failed.

Reconstruct the weight from the stored inputs

For each affected product or variation, record the stored shipping weight, its unit and the quantity in the real cart. Calculate the product-weight subtotal by multiplying each stored unit weight by its quantity and adding the relevant lines. Keep the source values alongside the calculation so a second person can identify a mistaken quantity, missing value or unit mismatch.

Use a single measurement unit for the comparison. A number entered under the wrong unit is a data issue even when the rate bounds were intentionally configured. Compare the store's weight unit, the units shown on the product records and the rate settings; do not silently round the subtotal to make it fit a range.

Keep your product-weight subtotal distinct from any total used by the actual shipping calculation. If that calculation includes a package or another component, record the documented component and its source before adding it. If you cannot establish the calculation's inputs, mark the evaluated weight as unconfirmed. A subtotal you reconstructed is useful evidence, but it is not proof of what an app or rate service received.

Compare the bounds without filling gaps by assumption

List the relevant manual rates in order of their lower weight bounds, preserving every configured lower and upper bound and the displayed unit. Compare each upper bound with the next lower bound. Also check whether the real cart is below the first range or above the final range; a gap need not sit between two tiers.

Place the real weight against those bounds using the setting's documented treatment of the endpoints. If the cart is exactly on an endpoint and the available record does not establish whether that endpoint is included, leave that particular match unresolved. Do not add an arbitrary increment or round away the uncertainty. Name the boundary whose behavior needs confirmation.

A confirmed uncovered interval establishes a coverage problem in the rate table you inspected. It does not establish that every checkout must display no rate at that weight: other applicable rate conditions and the actual platform behavior still matter. If your weight fits a range, stop treating a weight gap as the established cause and return to the profile, location, zone or rate-source evidence.

Choose the smallest supported correction

If a product weight or unit is wrong, correct that input from the product's genuine record before changing the shipping policy around it. If the inputs are right and an intended delivery range has a gap, the merchant must decide the intended coverage and charge. Preserve the earlier bounds, then have the authorized administrator adjust only the relevant condition. Do not expand delivery coverage or invent a rate merely to make an error disappear.

After an authorized correction, compare the applicable saved conditions and the shipping result for the same genuine cart and destination context. Record the observed rate and time without submitting another payment. A changed setting alone does not show that checkout now offers the intended shipping option.

A scoped Prism checkout consultation can start from the platform, affected profile, weight comparison and observed result. Describe the unresolved question and confirm responsibilities, fees and any implementation scope before work. Keep customer addresses, private checkout links and order exports out of the public inquiry.

Weight-range coverage

Use one sheet for each applicable weight-rate set in the real cart. Enter source values, units and findings in the final column. A confirmed interval gap supports a configuration decision; an unknown evaluated weight or endpoint remains a specific evidence gap.

Worksheet entries are not submitted by Prism’s worksheet and are not saved by the site. Use record types, availability, anonymized observations, or match/mismatch results. Do not enter government identifiers, customer names or addresses, customer messages, receipt-access links, card or bank details, passwords, or keys. Send sensitive documents only through the provider’s verified secure channel.

Limits

  • The documented troubleshooting scope is Shopify. Other platforms and shipping apps need their own rate conditions and documentation.
  • A weight-table gap does not by itself prove the full checkout outcome, automatic fallback behavior or failure of a carrier connection.
  • Shipping availability does not establish processing eligibility or delivery performance. Keep private checkout links, customer addresses and payment data out of worksheets and consultation forms.
