Read two separate mechanisms: where the held money comes from and when it becomes available again. Stripe calls a percentage of each new transaction held until one specified release date a fixed reserve. A rolling reserve releases each transaction’s held share after its own holding window. A transfer from an existing balance can accompany either structure; “fixed” does not necessarily mean a fixed amount taken up front. Classify only what the offer actually states, then mark missing bases, release rules, and review conditions as unresolved.

Classify the release rule before trusting the label
The useful distinction in Stripe’s reserve definitions is common timing versus individual timing. Under its fixed reserve, held shares from new transactions accumulate toward a specified release date. Under its rolling reserve, each transaction’s held share has its own window, so later transactions reach release later. Both descriptions can involve holding a percentage of each new transaction.
This means the word fixed does not, on its own, tell you that the provider will take a single fixed amount from your balance. Look for the sentence defining the release event. If an offer says only fixed reserve but never states the date or condition, you have a label without enough information to classify the cash timing.
Use Stripe’s definitions for a Stripe offer. A different provider may define its terms differently. Preserve that provider’s wording and ask it to resolve an undefined label rather than replacing the clause with a familiar industry name.
Read the source of funds as a separate dimension
A percentage is incomplete without its base. Locate the exact definition of the transactions or funds to which the percentage applies, the currency, and any stated treatment of fees or adjustments. Do not infer that the percentage applies to gross order totals, net proceeds, all methods, or every currency when the clause does not say so.
Stripe separately describes moving part of an existing balance into reserve in addition to a fixed or rolling plan for new transactions. That existing-balance transfer affects money already present, while a hold on new transactions affects future receipts. Record both when the offer contains both; one sentence about new transactions does not explain an immediate movement out of the existing balance.
If your actual offer specifies an upfront amount, record that amount and its source as written. If it states a cap, copy what the cap limits and what happens when it is reached. A ceiling on accumulated funds, a limit on new withholding, and a release condition answer different questions. Do not assume a cap exists, that reaching one releases money, or that capped is a complete reserve structure by itself.
Compare which dates each structure touches
For a common-date reserve, compare the written release date with the transaction dates covered by the clause. Earlier and later held shares point toward the same stated date, subject to the actual terms and review. For a rolling reserve, preserve the transaction event that starts each window, the window length, and the provider’s definition of days. If the offer omits the starting event or day convention, the timing remains incomplete.
The practical difference is which records you need to monitor. A common-date clause needs the accumulated hold and its stated release event. A rolling clause needs transaction-level holding and release records so you can distinguish a scheduled release of an older share from a new share being held. A balance that stays similar over time does not, by itself, prove that no rolling releases occurred.
Stripe’s reserve guide describes released funds moving into the available balance for the next payout. That release is not evidence that a bank deposit has arrived. Keep the reserve release, the payout record, and the bank receipt as separate events. Do not borrow dates or percentages from documentation illustrations to fill an offer’s missing terms.
Read the review clause alongside the expected release
Stripe’s reserve FAQ describes reserves as holds for potential refunds and disputes. Funds used to cover those events reduce what remains for release. It also describes a review near expiry that can change or extend a reserve, with an indefinite reserve possible in rare cases. A date in an offer therefore needs to be read alongside the actual review and extension language.
Keep the original clause, the offer date, and later notices together. Mark whether a date is a stated release date, a review date, or the end of a withholding period. Those are not interchangeable. If a later reply appears to change one of them, ask the provider which terms now apply and retain the written answer.
The reading is complete when you can identify the held base, the release mechanism, any existing-balance transfer, and the review conditions without adding assumptions. Then the reserve cash-calendar guide can help place the written terms beside your business dates. If one element is missing, send that specific gap back before treating this offer as comparable to another.
Use the comparison in a scoped consultation
For a Prism processing consultation, describe the website, research-only products, and the clause you need help organizing. Summarize whether the uncertainty concerns the held base, a common release date, rolling windows, or an existing-balance transfer. Keep the full offer in authorized business storage rather than pasting sensitive terms or account details into the public form.
Prism can discuss the business and the provider questions within an agreed scope. Confirm any proposal-review work, responsibilities, fees, and terms before it begins. The provider determines reserve terms and release decisions; a completed comparison does not approve the offer, establish affordability, or guarantee funds will arrive on a particular date.
Reserve-clause classification grid
Copy the relevant clause and its document date into your private records, then summarize each dimension here. Classify release timing separately from the source of funds. Mark an unstated term as unknown; do not fill it with a documentation example.
Worksheet entries are not submitted by Prism’s worksheet and are not saved by the site. Use record types, availability, anonymized observations, or match/mismatch results. Do not enter government identifiers, customer names or addresses, customer messages, receipt-access links, card or bank details, passwords, or keys. Send sensitive documents only through the provider’s verified secure channel.

Wording or record to locate
Interpretation to establish
Your reading
Common release date
Wording or record to locateA sentence naming one release date for held shares of new transactions.
Interpretation to establishThis matches Stripe’s fixed timing definition; it does not establish an upfront fixed amount.
Per-transaction window
Wording or record to locateThe holding period, its starting transaction event, and the definition of days.
Interpretation to establishThis matches rolling timing only when each held share follows its own window.
Percentage and held base
Wording or record to locateThe stated percentage, transaction or proceeds definition, currency, and adjustments.
Interpretation to establishEstablish what is being withheld without assuming a gross or net base.
Existing-balance transfer
Wording or record to locateA separate clause identifying existing funds moved into reserve and their release rule.
Interpretation to establishRecord this alongside the new-transaction plan, rather than treating it as proof of fixed timing.
Stated amount or ceiling
Wording or record to locateAny actual amount or cap clause, including what reaching it changes.
Interpretation to establishA cap is relevant only if written; reaching it does not imply release unless the terms say so.
Review and extension
Wording or record to locateReview trigger, extension language, later notices, and their dates.
Interpretation to establishDistinguish an expected release from a review that may change the hold.
Release versus deposit
Wording or record to locateReserve release record, payout entry, and bank receipt as separate records.
Interpretation to establishBecoming available for payout is not the same event as a bank credit.
Unresolved classification
Wording or record to locateExact missing definition or conflicting sentence and the provider’s dated reply.
Interpretation to establishLeave the offer unclassified where its own words do not establish the mechanism.

Stripe’s fixed and rolling definitions apply to Stripe; another provider’s written definitions control its offer.
No illustrative reserve percentage, fee formula, hold duration, or calendar date in public documentation establishes this account’s terms.
This worksheet does not recommend accepting an offer or changing funds controls. Keep card data, authentication codes, private links, secrets, bank details, and identity documents out of it.
Reserves : Stripe: Help & Support — checked 2026-09-29. Stripe defines fixed reserves by a common specified release date and rolling reserves by each transaction’s holding window; both can hold a share of new transactions. An existing-balance transfer is a separate addition. Released funds become available for payout; illustrations do not set merchant terms.
Stripe reserves FAQ — checked 2026-09-29. Reserved funds cover refunds and disputes; unused funds are released under the reserve terms. Review can change or extend a reserve, and in rare cases it may remain indefinitely. No account-specific release is promised.
Stripe balances and settlement — checked 2026-09-29. Stripe separates a provider reserve from a merchant-set minimum balance. Reserve funds cannot be paid out or transferred until the hold period is complete.
Prism solutions — checked 2026-09-21. The provider decides account terms, including reserve decisions. Requested Prism work requires agreed scope, fees, and terms.
Prism contact — checked 2026-09-21. The form collects the website, products, and question. A consultation request does not purchase a service or submit a processing application; sensitive records stay out of it.
