The retained amount alone cannot identify the cause. On Stripe, a merchant-set minimum balance retains available funds after an automatic payout; a provider reserve holds funds under separate reserve terms. Compare the actual payout setting and reconciliation record with any reserve notice and reserve balance for the same account and currency. Both mechanisms can need checking, and changing a minimum-balance setting does not release a reserve. If neither record explains the amount, leave it unclassified and investigate the remaining payout or balance discrepancy.
For: A research-only merchant who sees money remain in the payment account after an automatic payout and needs to identify the reason.
A minimum balance changes what the automatic payout leaves behind
Stripe’s minimum-balance documentation describes a merchant setting that leaves a specified amount in the account after automatic payouts. The payout sends the available funds above the minimum. The retained funds remain there to help cover refunds, disputes, and fees. This is different from the provider moving funds into a reserve with a hold period.
Locate the actual minimum-balance setting through authorized access and record its amount, currency, and the date you observed it. If you are explaining an earlier payout, seek the setting or record that applied at that time. Today’s configuration does not prove what was in force when the earlier payout was created.
Stripe’s documentation says the payout reconciliation report shows the amount retained because of the minimum balance. Compare that entry with the payout you are investigating. The setting establishes the configured minimum, while the payout record establishes what that payout retained. Do not call the difference between total sales and the bank deposit a minimum-balance hold without this connection.
A provider reserve has its own notice and release conditions
Stripe’s balances documentation distinguishes a reserve balance created by Stripe to cover expected refunds or disputes. Funds in that reserve cannot be paid out or transferred until the hold period is complete. Stripe’s reserve FAQ says the account is notified by email when a reserve is applied, with the amount or percentage and the period described in the terms.
Locate that notice and the corresponding reserve record. Copy the held base and release condition in the notice’s own words. A percentage in a reserve notice and a fixed amount in a minimum-balance setting describe different controls; a similar total does not make them the same funds.
The reserve FAQ also describes review before expiry and possible changes or extensions, with an indefinite reserve possible in rare cases. A minimum-balance setting does not replace those terms. The fixed-versus-rolling reserve guide linked below explains release timing within a reserve; it does not turn a reserve into a merchant payout preference.
Compare the same account, currency, and point in time
Put the payout entry, the minimum-balance record, and any reserve record side by side. Preserve their timestamps and currency labels. An account can have different balances and currencies, so a single displayed total is not enough to identify what an automatic payout could include. Do not add unlike currency amounts or compare an earlier hold with a later balance as if nothing happened between them.
Classify the retained amount as a minimum-balance effect only to the extent the setting and payout record support that conclusion. Classify funds as reserved when the reserve record and terms establish the hold. If both appear, preserve both records and their amounts separately. Do not deduct the reserve twice by assuming that an available-balance figure already includes it and then subtracting it again.
If neither explains the money, record the unexplained difference without inventing a cause. Stripe distinguishes pending and available payment balances from reserve balances. Other dated balance movements may also affect the comparison. Use the payout-reconciliation guide for that broader investigation rather than forcing every retained amount into one of these two categories.
Identify who can explain or authorize the next action
For a confirmed minimum-balance setting, identify the merchant’s authorized decision owner and the record of what was configured. The useful question is whether that setting explains the observed payout, not which amount someone else recommends. This guide does not select an amount or instruct you to disable a control. A minimum balance does not guarantee that future refunds, disputes, or fees cannot create a negative balance.
For a reserve, the provider controls its terms and release decision. Ask about the named hold and the specific condition that remains unclear. Changing the merchant’s minimum does not release reserve funds, confer processing eligibility, or remove an account restriction. If the setting or records cannot be accessed, record that access gap rather than assuming the control is absent.
For a Prism consultation, summarize which record you found and what it leaves unexplained, along with the website and research-only product context. The processing consultation can help frame the business and provider questions; confirm any record-reconciliation or account-assistance work, responsibilities, fees, and terms before work begins. Share non-sensitive summaries through the public form. Account settings require authorized merchant decisions, and reserve decisions remain with the provider.
Minimum balance and reserve comparison
Complete the comparison for one real account, payout, and currency. Record the evidence for each mechanism separately and leave unsupported classifications unknown. The final column is for your own non-sensitive record; keep account identifiers and original statements in authorized storage.
Worksheet entries are not submitted by Prism’s worksheet and are not saved by the site. Use record types, availability, anonymized observations, or match/mismatch results. Do not enter government identifiers, customer names or addresses, customer messages, receipt-access links, card or bank details, passwords, or keys. Send sensitive documents only through the provider’s verified secure channel.

Limits
Stripe’s documented distinction does not establish the rules or labels used by another provider, or feature availability for an unseen account.
No amount is recommended here. Changing a minimum balance does not release a provider reserve, establish eligibility, or guarantee protection from a negative balance.
Keep card details, authentication codes, private payment links, passwords, API secrets, full bank details, identity documents, and customer records out of the worksheet and public consultation form.
Minimum balances for automatic payouts | Stripe Documentation — checked 2026-09-29. A merchant-set minimum retains available funds after automatic payouts; the reconciliation report shows the retained amount. This control helps cover refunds, disputes, and fees but does not guarantee against a negative balance. Account applicability must be confirmed.
Stripe balances and settlement — checked 2026-09-29. Stripe distinguishes balances for different products and currencies, pending and available payment funds, provider reserve funds, and a merchant-set minimum. Reserve funds cannot be paid out or transferred until the hold period ends.
Stripe reserves FAQ — checked 2026-09-29. Stripe notifies the account of reserve terms and reviews the reserve near expiry; changes or extensions are possible. Reserve release depends on those terms and review, separate from a merchant’s minimum-balance setting.
Prism solutions — checked 2026-09-21. Prism can help organize business information and questions for a provider within an agreed scope. Account terms remain the provider’s decision, and scope, fees, and terms precede work.
Prism contact — checked 2026-09-21. The public form collects the website, products, and question. Card details, passwords, and customer records are excluded, and a request is not a processing application.
