Negative period activity is not the same as a negative ending balance
Use the account balance at the relevant time to ask about an outstanding balance; use net period movement to describe what changed during the selected window. Negative movement means recorded outflows exceeded inflows in that window. It does not establish a negative ending balance because the opening balance also matters. A historical ending balance is only the position at that period's cutoff, so compare it with the current account record before asking what remains to be resolved.
For: An owner or operations lead of a research-only business reading a negative activity total on a payment-account report.
Start by writing the account, settlement currency, selected dates and cutoff shown on the report. Stripe's balance summary report reconciles a selected period in settlement currency and separates gross, fee and net components. Its activity figures belong to that period. A balance brought into the period belongs to an earlier accumulation of activity.
Keep the period's opening balance, its complete movements and its ending balance on separate lines. Read the exact labels before copying numbers: a net activity subtotal is not necessarily the sum of every movement that changes the account balance. If the report displays payouts or other movements separately, include those in the reconciliation once, according to the report's definitions.
Reconcile the change before interpreting its sign
For the same account, currency and balance scope, opening balance plus the signed movements equals ending balance. If you instead list inflows and outflows as positive magnitudes, the calculation is opening balance plus inflows minus outflows. Choose one convention; subtracting an outflow that already carries a minus sign reverses its effect.
A negative net movement can use up only part of a positive opening balance, leaving the ending balance positive. A positive movement can reduce an existing negative opening balance without eliminating it. These are arithmetic relationships, not findings about your account. The actual opening figure and complete movement list decide which relationship applies.
Do not add gross, fees and net together as three independent flows. Net already reflects the components represented in that line. If your calculation does not reach the reported ending balance, retain the difference and identify the missing category, mismatched cutoff or scope that needs explanation. A balancing entry with no source record cannot resolve it.
Separate the period cutoff from the position now
A report ending in the past answers what the balance was at that cutoff. Record the current provider balance separately with its observation time, currency and exact label. Later movements may explain a difference; compare the intervening records instead of replacing the historical ending balance with today's figure.
Stripe's account-closure guidance illustrates why the distinction matters: in its owner-close flow, an account with an existing balance cannot be closed. A negative balance must be brought to zero, while a positive balance must be paid out. The sign of a period's activity total cannot establish which of those conditions applies.
Even a current negative figure does not supply every instruction needed to resolve it. Keep any provider notice about the amount, required action and timing next to the balance. Ask about the actual account condition shown there. This worksheet does not determine a legal debt, prescribe a funding method or infer a deadline from the sign of a report.
Choose the next question from the comparison
If the complete period movement is negative but the ending balance is not, describe the result as net outflows during that period. If the ending balance is negative, state that it was negative at the cutoff and then establish the current position. If the figures cannot be reconciled, ask the provider to identify the scope or entry needed to bridge the difference before calling the activity total an amount owed.
For a Prism processing consultation, describe the website, research-only products and whether the unresolved question concerns a report definition or a current provider balance. Scope, responsibilities, fees and terms are discussed before work. The provider retains account decisions. Use a short description in the public form, leaving bank statements, customer records, payment-card details and passwords in your authorized systems; the request starts a follow-up by email, not a processing application.
Period result and current balance comparison
Complete this for one account, one currency and one reporting window. Use source figures and document locations, not invented amounts. Reconcile the first five financial rows, then compare the result with the separately dated current balance. Leave unavailable figures blank and name the missing record.
Worksheet entries are not submitted by Prism’s worksheet and are not saved by the site. Use record types, availability, anonymized observations, or match/mismatch results. Do not enter government identifiers, customer names or addresses, customer messages, receipt-access links, card or bank details, passwords, or keys. Send sensitive documents only through the provider’s verified secure channel.

How to interpret it
Your figure and record location
Account and period scope
Record to useThe report header, account label, settlement currency and date boundaries.
How to interpret itEvery financial row must use this same scope; keep other currencies separate.
Opening balance
Record to useThe balance at the start of the selected period in the provider report.
How to interpret itCarry it forward once; it is not an inflow earned during this period.
Period inflows
Record to useComplete increases to the chosen balance from the report's defined movement categories.
How to interpret itRecord whether values are signed or positive magnitudes; do not mix conventions.
Period outflows
Record to useComplete decreases, including separately presented movements where the report requires them.
How to interpret itDo not count a fee twice through both its component and a net subtotal.
Net period movement
Record to useThe sum of all signed period movements, or inflows minus positive outflow magnitudes.
How to interpret itA negative result describes a decrease, not the ending position.
Ending balance
Record to useThe report's closing balance compared with opening balance plus net movement.
How to interpret itKeep any unexplained difference visible rather than adding an unsupported adjustment.
Current account position
Record to useThe current provider balance, exact label, currency and observation time.
How to interpret itA historical cutoff is not today; compare intervening movements if the figures differ.
Outstanding provider question
Record to useThe relevant balance notice and the specific unresolved definition or amount.
How to interpret itAsk about the actual balance and instructions, not a period subtotal relabeled as money owed.

Limits
Stripe report and owner-close rules apply to Stripe; another provider's records and instructions must define its own balance scope.
A negative activity total does not establish a negative account balance, a legal obligation or a required repayment date.
This original comparison worksheet is not a provider-approved accounting report. Technical processing functionality does not establish eligibility for a research-only business.
Stripe balance summary report — checked 2026-09-21. The balance report reconciles a selected period in settlement currency, separates gross, fee and net activity, and does not associate payouts with payment transactions.
Stripe: Close an account with an existing balance — checked 2026-09-21. Stripe's owner-close flow requires an existing balance to be resolved: a negative balance is brought to zero and a positive balance is paid out. This concerns the balance, not a period activity subtotal.
Prism solutions — checked 2026-09-21. Prism discusses scope, fees and terms before work; published support includes processing preparation and website questions, while the provider decides account terms and eligibility.
Prism contact — checked 2026-09-21. The inquiry asks for the website, products and question, excludes payment-card details, passwords and customer records, and leads to email follow-up rather than an appointment, purchase or processing application.
