When a product page copies a report value incorrectly

A public value no longer matches when its number, unit, qualifier, or field meaning differs from the matched original report. Compare the full report entry with each place the store repeats it, preserve the unchanged report, and correct the public transcription you can establish is wrong. An unreadable or ambiguous entry remains unresolved; do not select the more favorable value. This comparison establishes what was copied, not whether the laboratory result is scientifically valid.

For: A research-only merchant who has already matched a product to its report and has found a possible copying error in the public listing.

Freeze the document used for the comparison

Start with the report whose product and batch identity you have already established. Record its report identifier, issue date, page, and field location, and keep an unchanged copy in the business record. Save the currently published wording and URL before editing. This gives the correction two identifiable sides: what the report said and what the store published.

If the linked file is actually for a different product or batch, stop the transcription comparison and resolve that identity mismatch first. If the issuer has supplied a revised report, track it as a document replacement. Do not quietly change the reference document to make an old transcription appear accurate.

Compare the entire entry, not just its digits

Copy the report field label, result, unit, and any qualifier that belongs to that result. Compare them with the product specification, table, caption, or badge that repeats the value. A decimal position, omitted symbol, changed unit, or value copied from the neighboring column can change the statement even when most of the characters match.

Keep a result separate from a specification or acceptance limit. A page that presents a limit as the measured result has changed what the report says. Likewise, a value without the report’s qualification may present a stronger claim than the source supports. Record the exact discrepancy rather than reducing the finding to “numbers differ.”

Where formatting differs but the meaning may be equivalent, record the proposed equivalence and who can substantiate it. Do not convert units, round a result, interpret an abbreviation, or reconstruct an unreadable character merely to close the row. For a straight transcription correction, use the report’s own expression; an uncertain interpretation needs clarification from the issuer.

Follow the incorrect value to every public occurrence

Use the affected product and the incorrect expression to locate other merchant-controlled copies: product specifications, image text, collection summaries, FAQs, and downloadable summaries. Record each actual URL and surface separately. A shared product field and text embedded in an image can require different edits, so assign a correction owner for each occurrence.

The FTC’s truth-in-advertising guidance says advertising across media, including websites, must be truthful, nonmisleading, and substantiated. That supports checking the claim wherever it appears. It does not certify a particular replacement sentence or validate the underlying report.

Correct the public copy to the supported entry. Where the intended meaning remains unresolved, remove or withhold that unsupported value pending clarification while retaining the original evidence privately. Never edit the issuer’s report to agree with the storefront. After a correction, open the affected public surface and record the wording actually visible and the date observed.

Close the copying error without overstating the result

A correction is complete for a listed occurrence when the published expression matches the supported report entry and the comparison records who changed it and when it was checked. Keep unresolved locations visible in the correction record. A saved edit or an assigned task alone does not establish what visitors can read.

Accurate transcription does not establish authenticity, product quality, whole-catalog coverage, legal status, or processing eligibility. Those questions require their own evidence. For a scoped Prism website-review consultation, identify the product URL, the field that disagrees, and the review question. Scope, responsibilities, fees, and terms are confirmed before work. Send the website and question through the contact form without passwords, card data, or customer records; follow-up is by email.

Report transcription comparison

Complete one comparison for each affected report field and repeat it for every public occurrence. Enter the actual original and published expressions in your notes, including units and qualifiers. Mark a row corrected only after checking the public result; leave an uncertain interpretation open.

Worksheet entries are not submitted by Prism’s worksheet and are not saved by the site. Use record types, availability, anonymized observations, or match/mismatch results. Do not enter government identifiers, customer names or addresses, customer messages, receipt-access links, card or bank details, passwords, or keys. Send sensitive documents only through the provider’s verified secure channel.

Limits

  • This worksheet checks transcription after document identity has been established; it does not authenticate a report or validate a laboratory result.
  • An accurate copied value is not a legal clearance, product certification, or provider approval.
