Compare the coupon’s Exclude sale items setting and discount type with the item added to the cart. WooCommerce documents that, with the sale exclusion enabled, a per-cart coupon can stop working when a sale item is added afterward. Earlier acceptance therefore does not establish eligibility for the changed cart. Preserve the before-and-after discount and the exact message, then decide whether the saved rule matches the offer you intended.
For: An owner or store administrator of a research-only business investigating a coupon that worked before the buyer changed the cart.
The useful starting point is the transition: the coupon had a visible discount, the cart changed, and the discount then disappeared or an error appeared. Record those events separately. A report that the code worked earlier is useful evidence, but it does not describe which products were in the cart at that time.
WooCommerce’s coupon documentation ties the sale-item exclusion to products on sale and specifically warns about adding a sale item after applying a per-cart coupon. That provides a documented explanation to compare with the store’s records. It does not prove the cause of an unseen checkout, particularly if several cart fields or coupon settings changed together.
Read the sale exclusion beside the discount type
Open the affected coupon and record its saved discount type and Exclude sale items setting. WooCommerce core distinguishes a fixed cart discount, a fixed product discount and a percentage discount. A fixed cart coupon concerns a total discount for the cart; a fixed product coupon applies a fixed discount per eligible item. Do not assume the same visible result follows from the sale exclusion for every coupon type.
For a per-cart coupon with the exclusion enabled, the documented failure after a sale item is added is directly relevant. Compare the added product or variation with its actual sale-price state at the reported time. A promotional badge or a buyer’s description of a bargain is not a substitute for that product record. If the exclusion was disabled, the cited rule does not explain this failure by itself.
Record the WooCommerce version and any extension that supplies or modifies the promotion. The core guide acknowledges that additional plugins and customizations can change the settings. Keep a custom promotion’s behavior unresolved until its own configuration and documentation explain it.
Preserve the change without inventing the earlier state
Use the genuine report, available cart observations and coupon configuration to identify the products, variations, quantities and discount before and after the addition. Keep the exact restriction message. Distinguish a coupon removed from the cart from a coupon still listed with a different discount; those observations should not be compressed into one statement that the total changed.
If no earlier cart record exists, mark it unavailable. Today’s cart cannot establish yesterday’s contents, and today’s saved setting cannot prove what was saved before an edit. Record any known settings changes alongside the report. This preserves the difference between a supported explanation and a plausible explanation awaiting evidence.
If other changes occurred, note them too. WooCommerce also documents product and category restrictions, spend bounds, expiry and usage limits. A matching sale restriction can explain the transition without establishing that every other coupon condition was satisfied. An unexplained result belongs with the maintainer together with the precise cart change, not just the coupon’s name.
Choose between explaining the restriction and correcting the offer
When the saved sale exclusion matches the intended promotion and the observed cart change, explain the cart-level condition accurately. Do not tell the buyer that the code failed at random. Compare the published offer with that condition: wording that suggests every mixed cart remains eligible may need correction even when the coupon is behaving as configured.
When the setting conflicts with the merchant’s approved offer, the promotion owner should authorize the specific correction. Removing an exclusion changes who receives a discount; it is a business decision, not simply a troubleshooting step. Keep the original setting and the authorized change in the store’s own record.
For a scoped Prism checkout-review consultation, describe the platform, the cart change, the observed message and the rule that appears to explain it. Scope, responsibilities, fees and terms are confirmed before work. The inquiry does not itself authorize a coupon edit or establish a repair outcome.
Cart-change coupon trace
Use the real report and saved store settings. Record availability, match or mismatch in the last column; keep detailed cart records privately. A matching type, enabled exclusion and added sale item support the documented explanation. Missing earlier evidence or a conflicting result remains unresolved.
Worksheet entries are not submitted by Prism’s worksheet and are not saved by the site. Use record types, availability, anonymized observations, or match/mismatch results. Do not enter government identifiers, customer names or addresses, customer messages, receipt-access links, card or bank details, passwords, or keys. Record to compareThe discount type saved on the affected coupon.
How to interpret itIdentify whether this is a per-cart coupon before applying the documented cart-wide failure rule.
Exclude-sale setting
Record to compareThe saved exclusion and any available history of edits around the report.
How to interpret itAn enabled exclusion is required for this explanation; a later edit does not establish the earlier setting.
Cart before the change
Record to compareAvailable observation of items, variations, quantities and the applied discount before the addition.
How to interpret itMark the earlier state unavailable if it was not preserved. Do not reconstruct it as fact.
Added sale item
Record to compareThe added product or variation and its sale-price state at the reported time.
How to interpret itConfirm the item was on sale in the store record, rather than relying only on promotional wording.
Resulting error or discount
Record to compareThe actual message and whether the coupon disappeared or remained with a changed discount.
How to interpret itCompare this result with the documented per-cart restriction; keep unexplained differences open.
Other changes in the same interval
Record to compareKnown cart edits, coupon-setting edits and promotion extensions.
How to interpret itSeveral changes prevent attributing the result to the sale item alone.
Offer and correction authority
Record to compareThe promotion wording and the merchant’s decision about its intended scope.
How to interpret itDecide whether to clarify the offer, authorize a settings correction or investigate an unexplained result.

Limits
This describes WooCommerce core coupon behavior. Installed extensions and custom pricing rules require their own evidence.
A documented restriction is a possible explanation, not proof of the cause in a cart whose history is missing.
Keep customer records, private coupon-access details and payment information out of the worksheet and public consultation form.
