Checkout reliability

When a coupon your store issued is rejected

Compare the affected cart with the coupon’s saved restrictions and limits, then read the exact error. A rule mismatch can explain rejection, but it does not rule out an extension or checkout fault. A missing coupon entry box is a separate display issue. Record each mismatch before deciding whether the promotion’s rules or the implementation need correction.

For: An owner or administrator of a research-only store whose customers report a coupon failing at checkout.

Read the coupon as a list of rules

Start with the exact code, its availability date and expiry date. WooCommerce’s core documentation says the coupon cannot be used on its expiry date. Then check the total and per-customer usage limits; the item limit has its own applicability conditions.

Compare product inclusions, exclusions, sale-item restrictions, and allowed billing emails with the affected cart. Empty product restriction fields do not override a separate category, email or sale-item restriction.

For the core minimum-spend restriction, WooCommerce documents a subtotal-plus-tax calculation. Do not compare a promotional threshold with an unrelated total that includes shipping. Extensions may apply additional rules, so identify which feature owns the discount.

Individual use is about other coupons

Individual use only controls whether a coupon combines with other coupons. It does not mean one use per customer; that is a different limit. A separate automatic price adjustment is not necessarily a coupon, so inspect the discount implementation before treating it as a conflict.

The sale-item exclusion can prevent a coupon from applying to already discounted products. Check the actual sale state and coupon type rather than inferring eligibility from the displayed cart total.

A missing box is not a failing coupon

WooCommerce's Checkout block documentation says the coupon form can be removed from the block. If customers report they have nowhere to enter the code, that is a checkout configuration state, not evidence that any coupon rule rejected them. Confirm the form exists on the actual checkout page before working through rule comparisons.

There is also a cross-feature case: when free shipping is delivered through a coupon, WooCommerce's free-shipping guide requires the coupon itself to allow free shipping, and the free-shipping minimum can be applied before or after the coupon discount. A customer whose 'coupon works' but whose free shipping never appears may be holding a code without that flag, or falling under a threshold measured after the discount.

A coupon included in a WooCommerce sharable checkout URL still needs to be valid and active. A link does not bypass the coupon’s restrictions.

Choose the correction from the evidence

If a documented rule explains the rejection, compare that rule with the offer the store actually published. An intended restriction calls for a clear explanation; an accidental restriction calls for an authorized settings correction. Do not promise that one field edit will resolve every case.

If the cart meets the documented requirements but the code is still rejected, retain the error, active extension names and affected checkout details for the site maintainer. Reissuing a code with the same conditions may reproduce the problem. A consultation can address the storefront wording and questions to raise; implementation scope is confirmed separately.

Coupon-rule match sheet

Compare the coupon and affected cart. Record every mismatch and any unexplained result; do not include the customer’s email or order export in the worksheet.

Worksheet entries are not submitted by Prism’s worksheet and are not saved by the site. Use record types, availability, anonymized observations, or match/mismatch results. Do not enter government identifiers, customer names or addresses, customer messages, receipt-access links, card or bank details, passwords, or keys. Send sensitive documents only through the provider’s verified secure channel.

Limits

  • A matching rule does not exclude a technical fault, and several restrictions can apply together. Keep the exact error and unexplained results for the maintainer.
  • The documented fields describe WooCommerce's own coupon behavior; coupon features added by third-party plugins follow those plugins' rules and need their own evidence.
  • Keep customer emails, order exports, and account details out of shared worksheets and public forms. An inquiry does not authorize store changes.
