A fixed product coupon discounts each eligible item
In WooCommerce core, a fixed product coupon gives a set discount per eligible item; a fixed cart coupon gives a fixed total discount for the cart. The coupon amount is therefore not a once-per-order ceiling for a fixed product coupon. Check the saved type, eligible item quantity, restrictions and actual discount lines before calling the larger reduction an error. If the calculation matches the configured type but differs from the offer you intended, the problem is the promotion's configuration or wording, not necessarily the discount calculation.
For: A research-only merchant reviewing a WooCommerce coupon that applies successfully but reduces the order by more than the amount entered on the coupon.
Read the saved type before interpreting the amount
Open the coupon record and copy its discount type and amount as separate facts. WooCommerce documents percentage, fixed cart and fixed product discounts. For this comparison, fixed cart describes a total for the cart, while fixed product describes an amount for each eligible item. A code's name or the phrase used in a banner does not identify its saved type.
Use the settings that applied to the affected order where you have a retained record. If someone edited the coupon after the sale, today's configuration does not by itself explain yesterday's discount. Preserve the order's recorded coupon and discount values, and mark the historical settings as unknown when they cannot be recovered.
Count eligible units rather than visible product rows
Match each actual cart line to the coupon's product and category restrictions, exclusions and sale-item setting. Keep the purchased quantity alongside the eligible quantity. A product row containing multiple units is not necessarily one discounted item, and the total quantity in a mixed cart is not necessarily the quantity eligible for this coupon.
WooCommerce distinguishes usage limits for the coupon, usage limits per user and a limit on items. Its documentation says the item-limit field works only when specific products are entered in the Products restriction field. Do not treat a per-user usage limit as a limit of one discounted item, or assume that an item limit is effective without its documented product scope.
Once the eligible quantity and applicable limits are established, compare the fixed product amount with each eligible unit's recorded reduction. Where the full configured amount applies to each such unit, the comparison is the per-item amount multiplied by the discounted quantity. Treat that as a check against the actual lines, not permission to replace their values with an assumed total. If the full amount did not apply, keep the difference unresolved until the relevant setting or calculation explains it.
Compare this coupon with this coupon's recorded reduction
Use the discount attributed to the coupon where the order provides it, then reconcile it with the affected product lines. If the available record shows only a combined discount, record that limit before deciding how much this single code contributed. A difference between the advertised product subtotal and the final amount paid can contain other changes as well.
Keep other coupons, automatic pricing changes, shipping and separately recorded tax amounts visible in the comparison. WooCommerce's individual-use setting governs whether a coupon can combine with other coupons. A separate pricing extension may introduce behavior outside core coupon management, so identify the extension and version when that feature supplied the reduction. Core documentation alone cannot explain every custom discount result.
For a fixed cart coupon, compare the configured cart-level amount with the recorded total reduction attributable to it. For a fixed product coupon, inspect the eligible quantities and item reductions. Switching between those two comparisons simply because one produces the number you expected would conceal the actual setting.
Separate a correct calculation from an unintended offer
If the saved type, eligible quantity and recorded reductions agree, a total greater than the entered per-item amount can be the intended software behavior. Compare that result with the real offer published to buyers. A merchant who intended one fixed reduction per cart has a different offer from a merchant who configured a reduction for every eligible item.
When configuration and intended promotion disagree, preserve the affected order and published wording before an authorized person changes future settings or copy. Changing the coupon type now does not establish that an existing order was calculated incorrectly. Any decision about an already accepted order requires its own order and payment records; do not silently rewrite them to match a newly chosen promotion.
If the records do not reconcile, give the maintainer the saved type, applicable restrictions, quantities, recorded discount and the name of any discount extension, with the unexplained difference clearly identified. For a Prism checkout consultation, summarize whether the unresolved issue is arithmetic, eligibility or offer wording. Confirm review and implementation scope, responsibilities, fees and terms before work; keep customer records and private checkout links out of the inquiry.
Coupon-type amount comparison
Use one actual coupon and order. Fill in the applicable per-item or cart-level amount and mark the other as not applicable. Keep original line values; an unexplained difference is a finding to investigate, not a number to replace with an estimate.

Limits
The type distinction describes WooCommerce core coupons. Extensions and custom pricing rules require their own evidence.
A per-item multiplication is only a comparison after eligibility, quantity and applicable limits are established; it is not a replacement for the order's recorded discount.
This page does not determine tax treatment or authorize changes to an existing order or payment. Keep customer emails, payment details and private checkout links out of the worksheet and public form.
WooCommerce coupon management — checked 2026-09-29. Core fixed product coupons discount each eligible item, while fixed cart coupons apply a fixed total to the cart. Product restrictions, sale exclusions, individual use and separate coupon, user and item limits affect applicability; the item limit requires specific products. Extensions may change behavior.
