The application dropdown has no accurate category for your business

Pause the application rather than select the nearest convenient category. Capture the complete list of options and the form's exact question, describe the real activity from business records, and use any Other or free-text route the form offers. Stripe's guidance indicates that industry selection informs merchant category assignment and that Stripe may review the website, so a convenient misfit becomes a misdescription the site itself can contradict. Ask the provider in writing how it wants the business classified, file the reply, and submit only the selection that answer supports. A dropdown choice is classification input; it is never approval.

For: An owner or authorized representative completing a provider application whose category list contains no accurate option for the business.

Capture the form before you answer it

Record the form's exact question, the complete list of options and any accompanying help text, with the date. A constrained choice cannot be evaluated from memory, and the full list is the evidence that no accurate option was available. Note whether the list changes based on earlier answers, such as country or business type.

Check whether the form offers an escape route: an Other option, a free-text description field or a comment box. Whether an honest route exists inside the form determines what you ask the provider and what you can submit without misdescribing the business.

Describe the business from records, not from the option labels

Assemble the real activity independently of the form: the legal entity and brand, the product types actually offered, the sales channels in use and where fulfillment happens, each taken from business records. This description exists whether or not the dropdown has a home for it.

Compare the description with each option honestly. The nearest label is not the accurate label, and an option that fits only by ignoring part of the catalog is a misdescription. Record why each plausible option fails so the question to the provider is specific.

Understand what the selection does

Stripe's support guidance on setting an industry group indicates that the selection informs merchant category assignment and that Stripe may review the website. The choice therefore shapes how the account is classified, and the public storefront can later contradict a category chosen for convenience.

Treat the selection as classification input, never as approval. An accurate choice does not establish eligibility, and an inaccurate one does not stay hidden - it resurfaces as a mismatch between the account description and the website during review. Do not choose a less scrutinized category to ease the path, and do not invent a merchant category code.

Get the provider's answer before submitting

Ask the provider in writing: given these facts, which option should the business select, or should the Other or free-text route be used? File the dated reply with the application records. The provider owns the form, so only it can resolve a genuine gap in its own categories.

Submit the selection the written answer supports, and record the selection, the date and the reply behind it. If the provider's answer is still outstanding, the classification stays unresolved and the application waits. If organizing the business description and provider questions would help, Prism can discuss them in a consultation; scope, responsibilities, fees and terms are confirmed before work, and the inquiry does not submit the application.

Classification clarification sheet

Complete this before submitting any category selection. It records the constraint, the real activity and the provider's direction so the choice is documented rather than improvised. It does not make any option accurate by itself.

Worksheet entries are not submitted by Prism’s worksheet and are not saved by the site. Use record types, availability, anonymized observations, or match/mismatch results. Do not enter government identifiers, customer names or addresses, customer messages, receipt-access links, card or bank details, passwords, or keys. Send sensitive documents only through the provider’s verified secure channel.

Limits

  • Never select a less scrutinized category to ease review, and do not invent or guess a merchant category code.
  • A dropdown selection is classification input, not approval; the provider decides eligibility and account terms.
  • Stripe's industry-selection guidance applies to Stripe's form; another provider's categories need their own documentation and written answer.

Sources

  • Stripe: Setting an industry group — checked 2026-10-01. Industry selection informs merchant category assignment, Stripe may review the website, and the guidance includes an Other route when listed categories do not fit. It does not authorize an inaccurate category or imply approval for restricted products.
  • Prism solutions — checked 2026-09-21. Prism can help organize an accurate business description and provider questions. Scope, fees and terms are agreed before work; the provider decides eligibility and account terms.
  • Prism contact — checked 2026-09-21. The form requests the website, products and question and excludes payment-card details, passwords and customer records. Submitting it does not file the provider's application.
