Checkout reliability

Confirm whether the store is still in test mode

Confirm the mismatch from records, not from the decline message a buyer quoted. For the WooCommerce Stripe extension, the live connection and the test-mode connection are separate, and an Enable test mode option in the extension's settings decides which one the checkout uses. The Stripe Dashboard shows its own test and live data separately, and payments recorded there during the affected period sit on one side or the other. Record the mode indicators — never the API key values themselves — before changing anything. Switching to live processing requires a verified, eligible account; an account restricted to test mode cannot simply have test mode switched off.

For: An owner or administrator of a research-only store who suspects the live checkout is connected to a payment account's test mode.

Diagnose the existing mismatch from records

A reported decline or test-card message is a clue. Compare the affected order records with the store’s gateway settings and the provider’s mode indicators before changing the connection.

For the WooCommerce Stripe extension, WooCommerce documents that the initial connection to a Stripe account is live-only, and connecting in test mode is a separate process with its own connection status. After a test-mode connection exists, an Enable test mode option in the extension's settings decides whether checkout uses it. A store can therefore look fully connected while checkout points at test data.

If the real problem is a decline on a correctly connected live account, use the decline-triage guide instead. This page is for the failure state where the whole gateway points at the wrong environment.

Read the mode indicators, never the keys

In the extension's settings, the General section carries the Enable test mode option, and the connection screen's Test tab shows whether the test-mode connection is established. Write down what those indicators say. Do not copy the API keys into any note, ticket, or form: Stripe says secret keys must stay confidential on your own servers, and that Stripe employees never ask for them. The fact that test keys are present is a recordable indicator; the key values are not.

Stripe separates simulated test data from live payments. If the affected attempts appear only in test data, do not treat those entries as money collected from the buyers. Reconcile the mode shown in the extension with the provider view for the same period.

Also confirm that the connection names the account authorized for this store. Looking at a different account can resemble a mode problem. Record the account identity privately and resolve an unexpected connection with the account owner and extension support.

A test-only account is a different problem

WooCommerce documents the case where a Stripe account was created but never set up with business information: it can be connected as a test-only account, and while the account is restricted to test mode, the extension's test mode cannot be disabled. In that state there is no settings toggle that fixes the store.

Stripe’s account setup guide requires business verification and activation before live service use. A mode toggle does not establish eligibility or satisfy missing account requirements.

Separate an eligible account pointed at the wrong mode from an account that is not yet activated for live processing. The merchant supplies the required information; the provider decides whether activation requirements are met.

What to record before switching, and who owns what

Before anyone flips the mode, capture the period: which orders were recorded while the mismatch existed, what the buyers saw, and which connection and account the extension named. WooCommerce documents that orders created under test mode link to the corresponding charge in the Stripe dashboard, so those records remain traceable after the switch.

WooCommerce's own documentation divides the support line: the extension, its connection, and its checkout behavior are WooCommerce questions; account onboarding, verification, and Dashboard settings are Stripe account questions. If the account's live eligibility is the blocker, that conversation is with the provider.

For a consultation, describe the platform, observed mode indicators and affected period. Keep order exports, keys and login details in your own systems. Any implementation work needs an agreed scope and authorized account access.

Test-mode evidence sheet

Record indicators only. Never write an API key value, a card number, or an account password into this sheet or into any shared form.

Worksheet entries are not submitted by Prism’s worksheet and are not saved by the site. Use record types, availability, anonymized observations, or match/mismatch results. Do not enter government identifiers, customer names or addresses, customer messages, receipt-access links, card or bank details, passwords, or keys. Send sensitive documents only through the provider’s verified secure channel.

Limits

  • A payment recorded only in test data does not establish that the buyer was charged. Reconcile the affected records before changing the connection.
  • Record mode indicators, never API key values. Stripe says secret keys stay confidential on your own servers and are never requested by Stripe staff.
  • Switching to live processing requires a verified, eligible account; it is not a workaround for an account the provider has restricted to test mode.
