Find which record caused the business-name and tax-ID mismatch
Correct the record that is demonstrably inaccurate. First compare the provider’s rejection reason, the account’s legal-name and identifier-type fields, and the actual confirming record for that same entity. Stripe’s recorded US entity-verification requirements say the name and tax ID must match the account information. A trade name, the wrong identifier type, a document for another entity or an application mistaken for confirmation can prevent a useful comparison. If you cannot establish which record is wrong, ask Stripe support to clarify the requirement rather than changing the business identity to obtain a match.
For: An owner or authorized representative of a research-only business responding to a US Stripe entity-verification rejection.
Read the account’s actual rejection message and note the affected requirement, date and document type submitted. A request for a clearer document is different from a rejected name-and-identifier pair. Use the stated reason to decide which fields to compare. If the notice does not say what conflicts, record that uncertainty; repeated submissions of the same file do not explain it.
For a US Stripe entity request, privately compare the legal name and identifier information on the account with the confirming document for that entity. The worksheet below records identifier type and whether values match, never the identifier value. Keep the original document available to the authorized person who can inspect it. Another country or provider can have a different verification path, so do not transplant this US requirement onto a different account.
Keep legal name, trade name and identifier type separate
The IRS Instructions for Form SS-4 separate the legal name from a different trade or doing-business-as name. Line 1 uses the legal name from the applicable legal record. For a sole proprietor, the instructions put the individual’s name on line 1 and the business name on line 2. This distinction helps identify when a public brand has been copied into a field asking for a legal name. It does not tell you to change your entity type or select a different taxpayer to make verification pass.
Compare the names as recorded, including any differences you find, without assuming which difference caused the rejection. A brand-name mismatch is an observation; it becomes a correction only when the account field and confirming record establish the required legal name. Preserve a separate trade-name field where one is requested instead of replacing the underlying legal identity.
Stripe’s recorded US document guidance distinguishes EIN and SSN verification paths. Identify which type the account actually requests and which type your confirming record concerns. Do not substitute a personal identifier for an entity identifier, or the reverse, based on this article. A discrepancy involving entity classification or a business change requires the provider’s clarification and, where needed, advice from the business’s qualified tax adviser.
Choose the correction from the comparison
If the account contains a transcription error and the genuine confirming record establishes the right value for the same entity, have the authorized account owner correct the inaccurate account field using the provider’s process. Keep an internal note of the field corrected, the source record and the date. There is no need to copy the identifier into that note.
If the submitted document belongs to a different entity, records a different identifier type or is the wrong document, find the actual requested confirming record for this account. Stripe’s guidance explicitly distinguishes an SS-4 application from an IRS confirmation letter. A submitted application shows what was requested; it is not the confirmation Stripe describes. Do not edit a document image so it resembles the account entry.
If the underlying official record appears wrong, or you cannot establish which entity or identifier the account should represent, leave the mismatch open. Ask Stripe support which requirement and document path apply. Any correction to an official record belongs with the responsible issuer and the business’s authorized adviser. Changing both sides to a convenient name hides the discrepancy instead of resolving it.
When the account and confirming record already appear to agree, preserve that comparison and ask support about the unresolved rejection. The match you observe does not reveal Stripe’s cause or guarantee acceptance. The useful question names the rejection and the matching fields without sending identifier values through ordinary messages.
Submit through the provider’s documented process
Stripe’s recorded guidance directs sensitive verification documents through its Dashboard, rather than email or a Prism inquiry. Use the request for the actual account and country to determine what to submit. Record the document type and subsequent provider result in your internal log. A corrected field or completed upload is an action taken; verification is complete only when the provider records that result.
If you want a Prism processing consultation, describe the website, research-only products and the mismatch in ordinary language: which field was rejected, which document type you have and what remains unclear. Keep tax-ID values, identity documents and account screenshots containing private data out of the public form. Prism can help organize the processing question; scope, responsibilities, fees and terms are discussed before work.
The inquiry receives email follow-up and does not book an appointment, purchase a service or submit a processing application. Entity verification also remains separate from approval to process a particular catalog. The provider decides eligibility and account terms even after identity information is corrected.
Entity verification mismatch record
Compare the full records privately, then enter only names appropriate to your internal worksheet, document types, match findings and responsible roles. Never enter an EIN, SSN, ITIN, document image or other identifier value. A blank or unknown means the evidence does not yet identify a correction.
Worksheet entries are not submitted by Prism’s worksheet and are not saved by the site. Use record types, availability, anonymized observations, or match/mismatch results. Do not enter government identifiers, customer names or addresses, customer messages, receipt-access links, card or bank details, passwords, or keys. Send sensitive documents only through the provider’s verified secure channel.

Rejection reason
Where to establish itThe actual account notice and affected verification requirement.
How the finding changes the next stepDistinguish a name/identifier mismatch from a document-quality request; ask support when the reason is unclear.
Account legal name
Where to establish itThe legal-name field on the account being verified.
How the finding changes the next stepCompare this with the genuine confirming record; identify any trade name entered in its place.
Confirming document name
Where to establish itThe name printed on the actual confirming document for this entity, with its document type.
How the finding changes the next stepA different name needs investigation. An SS-4 application is not the IRS confirmation letter.
Identifier type without value
Where to establish itThe identifier type requested and the type confirmed by the record; compare actual values only in authorized systems.
How the finding changes the next stepRecord match, mismatch or unknown. EIN and SSN paths must not be treated as interchangeable.
Mismatch location
Where to establish itThe account entry, selected document or underlying official record, based on the comparison.
How the finding changes the next stepChange only the demonstrated error; if the location remains unknown, seek clarification instead of changing identity.
Correction owner
Where to establish itThe authorized account owner, document holder or adviser responsible for the specific correction.
How the finding changes the next stepIdentify who may change the account or obtain the correct official record, without sharing their credentials.
Submission and provider result
Where to establish itThe Dashboard submission receipt and later status, summarized without document contents.
How the finding changes the next stepSeparate corrected/submitted from verified. If rejection continues, retain the new reason for support.
These are temporary notes. Leaving or reloading this page may clear them. Worksheet entries are not sent automatically. If you copy notes into the consultation message and submit the form, Prism receives them as part of your request.
Limits
Stripe document statements here are limited to the recorded United States entity-verification scope. Use the account’s own request for its country and identifier path.
IRS SS-4 naming instructions are not Stripe’s document list and do not establish the correct tax classification for your business.
Do not alter official documents, substitute another entity’s identity or send tax identifiers and identity files through the public inquiry.
Stripe acceptable verification documents — checked 2026-09-29. For US entity verification, name and tax ID must match the account. EIN and SSN paths differ; an SS-4 application is not IRS confirmation. The rejection reason guides correction, unresolved document questions go to support, and sensitive documents go through Stripe Dashboard.
IRS Instructions for Form SS-4 (12/2025) — checked 2026-09-21. Line 1 identifies the legal name; line 2 identifies a different trade name. A sole proprietor enters the individual name on line 1 and business name on line 2. These are EIN-application naming instructions.
Prism solutions — checked 2026-09-21. Prism can organize a processing question; scope, fees and terms are discussed before work. The provider determines eligibility, documents and account terms.
Prism contact — checked 2026-09-21. The inquiry requests website, products and question, excludes card details, passwords and customer records, and receives email follow-up. It does not book an appointment, purchase a service or submit an application.
