Checkout reliability

A physical item is configured as virtual at checkout

Check whether the exact product being purchased is marked virtual. WooCommerce documents that the virtual setting disables shipping fields and does not trigger the shipping calculator. If the item must be sent physically, that setting can contradict the real fulfillment need. Confirm the affected product or variation and cart contents, record the mismatch, and agree on a product-configuration correction before replacing a carrier integration or payment provider.

For: A research-only store owner whose WooCommerce checkout omits shipping for an item the business must physically send.

Start with what must leave the business

Identify the item on the affected cart or existing order by its product identifier and selected option. Compare it with the catalog record and the actual fulfillment obligation. The relevant question is whether fulfilling that line requires physical goods to be sent. A product name, an in-stock label or a successful payment does not answer how WooCommerce has classified it for shipping.

Open the configuration for that exact item. Record the product type and visible flags, including the virtual setting. If the order names a variation, establish which record controls that selection rather than inspecting only a similarly named parent or another option. If an extension defines the product type, record its identity and leave its additional behavior unconfirmed until its own configuration is understood.

The virtual flag can remove the shipping step

WooCommerce's virtual-product documentation says marking a product virtual disables shipping fields and does not trigger the shipping calculator. This is a product configuration effect. It explains why a checkout can omit shipping rather than attempt a rate calculation and report that no method is available.

Interpret the setting alongside the whole cart. A cart containing only items configured as virtual normally has no shipping requirement. In a mixed cart, a shipping section can appear because another item needs delivery; its presence does not establish that the misclassified item is being treated correctly. Record the affected line separately from what the overall checkout displays.

A virtual flag on an item the business must send is a documented configuration mismatch, but do not conclude that it explains every missing address or rate. If that flag is off, or the installed extension changes the shipping path, preserve the observation and continue with the relevant configuration. The symptom alone does not identify a payment-account problem.

Agree on a correction and a concrete result

Give the catalog owner or maintainer the exact item, the fulfillment need, the current flag and the observed checkout omission. Agree that the corrected classification must represent the physical item truthfully. Review any shipping inputs the business actually needs for that product and its installed shipping methods, using real catalog values rather than invented dimensions, weights or charges.

Keep the change limited to the records confirmed to be wrong. Removing a virtual flag is not permission to reclassify every product, expand delivery coverage or rewrite shipping prices. If an import or external catalog feed controls the record, have its owner confirm the corresponding source value so a later update does not knowingly restore the mismatch.

Define the verification before the edit: the affected physical item must participate in the intended shipping flow, the appropriate shipping inputs must be available, and the calculation must reach a result consistent with the store's actual delivery offer. A new no-methods message means the shipping requirement is now being reached but availability still needs investigation. It is progress in locating the problem, not proof that delivery is fully repaired.

Existing orders need their own fulfillment check

Preserve the original order records for affected physical items. Inspect whether each unresolved order contains a confirmed delivery destination and the shipping arrangement needed to fulfill it. Do not assume that editing the current product has supplied missing information on earlier orders or authorized an additional shipping charge.

Route an unresolved destination or price question to the merchant's authorized order-support process. Use the information already confirmed for that order and obtain clarification where needed; do not fill a shipping gap by assuming a billing address is the delivery address. The product configuration repair and the decision about an existing order are separate tasks.

For a Prism checkout-review consultation, summarize the platform, product configuration mismatch and the point at which shipping disappears. Confirm investigation or implementation scope, responsibilities, fees and terms before work. The public form needs the website, research-only products and question, not customer addresses, order exports or credentials. Email follow-up does not itself purchase a repair or establish processing eligibility.

Product shipping-flag check

Use one affected product or variation and an actual cart or existing order record. Record findings without customer details. A physical fulfillment need paired with a virtual flag identifies a correction to agree; a flag that already matches the product sends the investigation to the next documented shipping dependency.

Worksheet entries are not submitted by Prism’s worksheet and are not saved by the site. Use record types, availability, anonymized observations, or match/mismatch results. Do not enter government identifiers, customer names or addresses, customer messages, receipt-access links, card or bank details, passwords, or keys. Send sensitive documents only through the provider’s verified secure channel.

Limits

  • The cited virtual-product behavior is WooCommerce behavior. Extensions and custom product types need their own evidence; other platforms may classify shipping differently.
  • Correct classification does not guarantee an available shipping method, a particular rate, permission to ship to a destination or payment-provider approval.
  • Keep customer addresses, card data, credentials and private order links out of the worksheet and public consultation form. Existing-order changes require their own authorized handling.

  • WooCommerce virtual products — checked 2026-09-21. Marking a product virtual disables shipping fields and does not trigger the shipping calculator. This supports checking classification, not assuming that every missing rate has this cause.
