Costs and account terms

A cancellation quote includes an early termination charge

Trace the quoted line to the agreement and clause the provider says applies, identify the event that allegedly triggers it, and reproduce the amount only from the written calculation basis. Keep any earlier unpaid fees separate from a charge for ending the relationship. The result is either a traceable calculation or a precise unresolved question; it is not a conclusion that the charge is valid, avoidable or standard across providers.

For: An owner or authorized representative of a research-only business who has received a processing cancellation quote containing a proposed termination charge.

Find which agreement the quote is ending

Keep the quote as received, including its date, currency, named supplier, account or service reference and any stated assumptions. Then locate the agreement it refers to, the applicable fee schedule and any amendment or addendum. A cancellation total can be impossible to assess when the quote does not identify which service is being ended. Do not assume that stopping checkout, closing an account and ending every associated contract describe the same event.

Stripe's Services Agreement illustrates why a public pricing page is not enough: its agreement includes general, service and incorporated terms, regional terms depend on account country, and written fee agreements can differ from public pricing. These are features of Stripe's own agreement. They do not supply an early termination fee for another provider, and they do not establish that a particular Stripe account has the charge in your quote.

Preserve the version your provider relies on and any document it cites. If the quote references an agreement you cannot locate, the missing agreement is the first gap. If two provisions appear inconsistent, retain both and ask which provision the provider used, rather than silently choosing one.

Tie the alleged trigger to a real event

Read what the cited clause says must happen before the charge applies. Compare that wording with your actual notice, the provider's acknowledgment, the proposed effective end date and the term dates in the agreement. Where a calculation depends on time remaining, the start date and end date are calculation inputs, not background details. A quotation prepared for one end date may not describe the cancellation you intended.

Record notice method and receipt separately from the day your team decided to leave. Stripe's general terms distinguish notice channels and deemed receipt, but that does not resolve whether your notice to another supplier was effective. The purpose of this comparison is to find the exact event and date the provider used. Questions about legal effectiveness, cancellation rights or enforceability require advice based on the actual agreement and jurisdiction.

If the provider cannot identify the triggering event, do not reverse-engineer a trigger from the amount. Ask for the clause and the event together. If the event is identified but the date differs from your records, describe that date discrepancy before debating the arithmetic.

Reproduce the quoted line without creating a formula

Copy only the inputs the written basis actually names. For a stated fixed amount, compare that amount and its applicable conditions with the quote. For a calculation, identify each required input, its unit and the record supplying it. If the clause refers to another schedule or to a defined fee category, obtain that definition before calculating. Do not substitute gross sales, a remembered monthly bill or a public rate for an input with a different definition.

Keep a proposed termination charge separate from earlier unpaid service fees or other quoted items. Stripe's general terms allow specified fee collection mechanisms and state that debit authorization can survive account closure until amounts are paid. The continued collection of an amount therefore does not, by itself, identify it as a new termination charge. Read the description and basis of each line.

A calculation you can reproduce supports an arithmetic match under the stated inputs. It does not settle whether those inputs or the underlying clause apply. If the quote combines several items into one total, request the breakdown. If the equation cannot be reproduced, retain the difference and the missing or conflicting input; do not fill the gap with an assumed standard exit-fee formula.

Choose the next question from the missing link

Classify the result by its weakest link. A missing document calls for the agreement or schedule. An unclear trigger calls for the provider's stated event and date. An unexplained amount calls for the itemized calculation and input records. A fully traceable quote can be recorded as matching the stated basis, with any legal interpretation left separate. Preserve a later clarification alongside the original quote so a changed amount does not erase how the question began.

For a processing consultation with Prism, summarize the planned change, the quoted charge category and the unresolved link in this trace. The processing service can frame the business situation and provider questions; any requested document-analysis work, responsibilities and fees must be agreed before it begins. A consultation does not cancel the account, negotiate away the charge or determine its enforceability.

Termination charge trace

Use this for one actual quoted line. Examine the documents privately and record only non-sensitive references or match findings here. Work from clause to event to inputs to amount; a blank link is a question to resolve, not a zero charge or a finding of invalidity.

Worksheet entries are not submitted by Prism’s worksheet and are not saved by the site. Use record types, availability, anonymized observations, or match/mismatch results. Do not enter government identifiers, customer names or addresses, customer messages, receipt-access links, card or bank details, passwords, or keys. Send sensitive documents only through the provider’s verified secure channel.

Limits

  • This comparison does not establish a universal early termination charge, a right to cancel or a right to avoid payment.
  • Stripe's agreement structure and collection provisions apply within its own service and regional scope; they do not interpret another provider's agreement.
  • Arithmetic reconciliation does not decide enforceability. Keep contracts with private account details and bank information out of the public consultation form.

Sources

  • Stripe Services Agreement general terms — checked 2026-09-29. The agreement combines general, service and incorporated terms, with regional terms based on account country. Written fee agreements can differ from public prices; notice channels and deemed receipt are distinguished, and debit authorization can survive account closure until amounts are paid. These provisions do not establish a particular termination charge or its enforceability.
